Minimize page depth in your information architecture

Recommendation: Minimize the number of levels in your site hierarchy. Strive for no more than three levels of navigation: primary, secondary, and tertiary.

At each level, avoid choice paralysis by striving for a maximum of 7 choices (pages) at each level. If more pages are necessary, grouping the information into smaller chunks or steps in the information architecture may be necessary. You may also choose to reduce or condense your content.

The deeper a hierarchy becomes, the more likely visitors are to become disoriented.” - The Nielsen-Norman Group
