A permalink is a type of URL that shows where a piece of content, such as a page, profile, or news post is permanently stored on a WordPress site. A permalink isn't something you have to think about often, but it can come up when you are proposing a new content type (what should the URL for degree programs and categories of degree programs look like to the user?), as well as when you move content around the site, such as while you are reorganizing information architecture. A permalink can also become outdated or incorrect when the title or content of a page changes significantly, but the permalink stays the same. This creates a situation where the permalink says you will get content that no longer exists and can create SEO problems.

Be aware of when you are changing or modifying permalinks, especially with sites that are being redesigned. You will need to keep track of the permalinks that are changing and create redirects for them so users can still access the content they need. If you don't do this, you can cause 404 errors, which are frustrating for your site visitors and prevent them from reaching the content they are looking for.
