{"id":1287,"date":"2022-09-19T14:15:57","date_gmt":"2022-09-19T18:15:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wpdocs.bu.edu\/cds\/?page_id=1287"},"modified":"2022-09-22T16:54:18","modified_gmt":"2022-09-22T20:54:18","slug":"cds-degrees-programs","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wpdocs.bu.edu\/cds\/template-and-content-examples\/cds-degrees-programs\/","title":{"rendered":"CDS Degrees &#038; Programs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span>Degrees &amp; Programs is a <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/support\/article\/post-types\/\">&#8220;post type&#8221;<\/a> that contains information about various courses, degrees, and programs offered by entities across Boston University that CDS is involved or associated with.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>There are 3 types of Degrees &amp; Programs posts: <em>Pages<\/em>, <em>Programs,<\/em> and <em>Degrees<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Post Options<\/h2>\n<p>Degrees &amp; Programs posts include several navigation components to help users understand where they are within a section. This adapts as users make selections to show the path they&#8217;ve followed in navigating posts.<\/p>\n<h3>Sub-Navigation<\/h3>\n<p>Located under the breadcrumb navigation and adapts as users make selections to show the next adjacent sub-post(s) <em>to<\/em> the current post.<br \/>\nIt includes a CTA button which is editable from the post type within the admin(See Program Call To Action section below for more.).<\/p>\n<h3>Areas of Study, Areas of Interest<\/h3>\n<p>Located beneath both the Breadcrumb and Sub-Navigation. This section appears on Program and Degree types. This section includes links back to the landing pages for any related Departments\/Divisions focused on an Area of Study. These are controlled by adding the Area of Study taxonomy to a Degrees &amp; Programs post type.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><strong>NOTE:<\/strong> <\/em>Areas of Study and Areas of Interest taxonomy terms will <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">need to be included for every Program &amp; Degree type<\/span>. Not including them will result in an empty space which still outputs visually as an empty bar.<\/p>\n<p>To set the location for these Areas of Study links, navigate to <strong>Degrees &amp; Programs<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Area of Study<\/strong>. To set the link for the Area of Study, choose the Landing Page you would like to set it to by editing the term from the list of available Areas of Study. At the bottom of the editor, there is a dropdown labeled \u201cLanding Page\u201d. This area gives the user an overview of all Degrees &amp; Programs posts and sub-posts within them.<\/p>\n<h2>Activating Degrees &amp; Programs<\/h2>\n<p>To enable the public to access Degrees &amp; Programs posts, a custom link needs to be added to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cds-faculty\/wp-admin\/edit.php?post_type=bu-program-page&amp;page=bu-navigation-manager\">BU Navigation<\/a> manager. This can be done by in the WordPress admin and navigating to Pages &gt; Edit Order. From there, click Custom Link and paste the URL path of your main, parent Degrees &amp; Programs post.<\/p>\n<h2>Block Editor<\/h2>\n<p>The content area for Degrees &amp; Programs posts utilizes the new<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/support\/article\/wordpress-editor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">block editor from WordPress<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Page Type Blocks (<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wpdocs.bu.edu\/cds\/cds\/degree-program\/page-type-example\/\">Example<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>) \u2014 suitable for a parent Landing Page and additional child sub-post(s) within\u00a0a Program or Degree post.<\/li>\n<li>Program Type Blocks ( <a href=\"https:\/\/wpdocs.bu.edu\/cds\/cds\/degree-program\/program-post-example\/\">Example<\/a> ) \u2014 suitable for an overview of a program dedicated to a field subject (i.e.: Data Analytics, etc.)<\/li>\n<li>Degree Type Blocks ( <a href=\"https:\/\/wpdocs.bu.edu\/cds\/cds\/degree-program\/program-post-example\/degree-post-example\/\">Example<\/a> ) \u2014 suitable for detailing a specific degree offered (i.e.: MS in Data Analytics, etc.) and listing any applicable courses.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>See examples, and learn more about each block below:<\/p>\n<h3><span>BU Degrees &amp; Programs List<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/cds\/files\/2022\/09\/Screen-Shot-2022-09-20-at-3.50.44-PM-1024x750.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"750\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1356\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wpdocs.bu.edu\/cds\/files\/2022\/09\/Screen-Shot-2022-09-20-at-3.50.44-PM-1024x750.png 1024w, https:\/\/wpdocs.bu.edu\/cds\/files\/2022\/09\/Screen-Shot-2022-09-20-at-3.50.44-PM-300x220.png 300w, https:\/\/wpdocs.bu.edu\/cds\/files\/2022\/09\/Screen-Shot-2022-09-20-at-3.50.44-PM-768x562.png 768w, https:\/\/wpdocs.bu.edu\/cds\/files\/2022\/09\/Screen-Shot-2022-09-20-at-3.50.44-PM.png 1132w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Used to display available programs or degrees at-a-glance, this block can be a vital way of demonstrating or curating an easy, consolidated range of offering CDS is associated with by providing featured imagery, excerpts and program page settings.<\/p>\n<p>It comes with the ability to rename the title of the block, define a button with a URL to link elsewhere[to view more], and a layout selection of either List or Grid\/Cards view. CDS is advised to use the Grid\/Cards view. There&#8217;s also options to hide featured images, excerpts, or details. Settings are of preference but it&#8217;s recommended to show all to take full advantage of this blocks capabilities.<\/p>\n<p>Which programs and\/or degrees are displayed are defined by the Mode selection. Setting Mode to <em>Query Mode<\/em> allows you to automatically pull in and narrow to programs and degrees based on options defined in\u00a0 their Program Page Settings(see below). It also allows you to limit the number of entries and how they&#8217;re ordered which is great for quickly getting things up and running. Setting Mode to <em>Manual<\/em> allows you to search for specific programs or degrees to include. This approach is great for curation if you&#8217;re looking to showcase new or featured programs and\/or degrees as there can be multiple BU Degrees &amp; Programs List blocks to a single post.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s best advised to define a BU Degrees &amp; Programs List with <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">either<\/span>\u00a0programs <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">OR<\/span> degrees: rarely should both be put together in the same block, in order to avoid contextual confusion.<\/p>\n<h3>Media &amp; Text<\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1303\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1303\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/cds\/files\/2022\/09\/Screen-Shot-2022-09-19-at-4.36.27-PM-1024x390.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"390\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1303\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wpdocs.bu.edu\/cds\/files\/2022\/09\/Screen-Shot-2022-09-19-at-4.36.27-PM-1024x390.png 1024w, https:\/\/wpdocs.bu.edu\/cds\/files\/2022\/09\/Screen-Shot-2022-09-19-at-4.36.27-PM-300x114.png 300w, https:\/\/wpdocs.bu.edu\/cds\/files\/2022\/09\/Screen-Shot-2022-09-19-at-4.36.27-PM-768x293.png 768w, https:\/\/wpdocs.bu.edu\/cds\/files\/2022\/09\/Screen-Shot-2022-09-19-at-4.36.27-PM.png 1092w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1303\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>An example of a Media &amp; Text block using a &#8220;Show Media on Left&#8221; layout.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Used to display an image next to a short amount of text, this block is a great way to add some visual interest to the page, help break up content, and make an offering more readable and interesting for users. The image portion has a treatment exclusive to this theme applied on both left and right hand sides to make it feel like it&#8217;s part of the page.<\/p>\n<p>You have the option to choose whether you want the image media to be positioned on the right or left of the text. You have a number of options of content blocks that you can add to the content section of this block, including a heading, paragraph, button, etc. \u2014 however it&#8217;s important to be mindful that content doesn&#8217;t visually disrupt the equal balance between the two. It is recommended that both the \u201cStack on mobile\u201d and \u201cCrop image to fit entire column\u201d options are turned on for best results.<\/p>\n<h3>Cover<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/cds\/files\/2022\/09\/Screen-Shot-2022-09-19-at-4.44.30-PM-1024x620.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"620\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1304\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wpdocs.bu.edu\/cds\/files\/2022\/09\/Screen-Shot-2022-09-19-at-4.44.30-PM-1024x620.png 1024w, https:\/\/wpdocs.bu.edu\/cds\/files\/2022\/09\/Screen-Shot-2022-09-19-at-4.44.30-PM-300x182.png 300w, https:\/\/wpdocs.bu.edu\/cds\/files\/2022\/09\/Screen-Shot-2022-09-19-at-4.44.30-PM-768x465.png 768w, https:\/\/wpdocs.bu.edu\/cds\/files\/2022\/09\/Screen-Shot-2022-09-19-at-4.44.30-PM.png 1172w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Used to display a large background image with text overlaid, this block is another great way to lead in content and\/or break up content on a page to add visual interest. A number of different content blocks can be included on top of the image (specifically a heading, paragraph, button, etc.) when set in a Group. To get the specific background treatment demonstrated above(in place of a background image), use the word <code>shaded<\/code> in the <strong>Custom CSS<\/strong> field located under the <strong>Advanced<\/strong> section within Cover Block Options.<\/p>\n<h3>Column Block<\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1306\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1306\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/cds\/files\/2022\/09\/Screen-Shot-2022-09-19-at-4.57.02-PM-1024x579.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"579\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1306\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wpdocs.bu.edu\/cds\/files\/2022\/09\/Screen-Shot-2022-09-19-at-4.57.02-PM-1024x579.png 1024w, https:\/\/wpdocs.bu.edu\/cds\/files\/2022\/09\/Screen-Shot-2022-09-19-at-4.57.02-PM-300x170.png 300w, https:\/\/wpdocs.bu.edu\/cds\/files\/2022\/09\/Screen-Shot-2022-09-19-at-4.57.02-PM-768x435.png 768w, https:\/\/wpdocs.bu.edu\/cds\/files\/2022\/09\/Screen-Shot-2022-09-19-at-4.57.02-PM.png 1101w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1306\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>An example of a simple 2 column equal layout using an image on the left and textual information on the right.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Used to display a large image with text overlaid, the column block is another great way to break up content on a page and add visual interest. You can add a number of different content blocks within one column and a solid image in the other, with plenty of column layout options to build from. The recommended usage would be the equal 2 column treatment.<\/p>\n<h3>Shortcode<\/h3>\n<p>This block is used to include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/services\/cccs\/websites\/www\/wordpress\/management\/shortcodes\/#map\">shortcodes<\/a> within the block editor. An example of a great way to utilize this block on Degree pages is to use<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wpdocs.bu.edu\/eng\/template-and-content-examples\/profiles\/#shortcode-examples\">BU Profile shortcodes<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>to show related faculty or staff profiles. You can also use this block to pull in<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/services\/cccs\/websites\/www\/wordpress\/how-to\/embed-course-feeds\/\">Course Feeds<\/a>,<span>\u00a0<\/span>which display courses required for a particular degree.<\/p>\n<h3>Form<\/h3>\n<p>The Form block is used to display a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/services\/cccs\/websites\/www\/wordpress\/features\/gravity-forms\/\">Gravity Form<\/a> on a page. It requires an established Gravity Form to work. These are accessible under a <strong>Select Editor Template<\/strong> button located next to the Preview, Update and Settings buttons in the top-right corner of the post editor. The most commonly used and appropriate templates are <em>Program Content<\/em> and <em>Degree Content<\/em>. You can choose either to Replace, Append, Prepend, or Merge these preset blocks with your existing content or if starting a post from scratch.<\/p>\n<h2>Program Page Settings<\/h2>\n<p>When creating a Degrees &amp; Programs post (underneath the main post block space) there are various options from which selections can be made depending on the type:<\/p>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h1 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Page Type<\/h1><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p><span>The Page type can be used as a central landing page for all degrees and programs posts and for any child pages of a Program or Degree type. These can be used to offer additional information about the degree such as Programs &amp; Degrees offered, high-level details, admissions, program planning sheets, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h1 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Program Type<\/h1><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p>The Program type is used to detail a program and collect any degrees relevant to it.<span> <\/span>Posts using the Program type will have the following options towards the bottom of the editor, each being optional(but it&#8217;s recommended that some be defined for a high-level user experience, as they summarize the degree offerings within it):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Degree Option<\/strong>: Select the types of degrees offered (e.g., BS, MS, PhD, etc.). <em>To limit the options shown in this area to only degree types being provided, see Enable Degree Options below.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Education Level<\/strong>: Select the relevant education level(s) (e.g., Certificate, Doctorate, Graduate, Undergraduate).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Formats<\/strong>: Select formats offered\u00a0(e.g., Hybrid, In-Person, Online).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Availability<\/strong>: Select all options of availability (e.g., Full-Time, Part-Time).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Location<\/strong>: Select all applicable location(s) options (e.g., Off-Campus, On-Campus).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Area of Study<\/strong>: Select any related Areas of Study. <em>These link back to the related Department\/Division or Area of Study landing page will be controlled by what is selected here.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h1 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Degree Type<\/h1><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p>The Degree type should be used to create posts detailing information specific to degrees themselves.<span> <\/span>Posts using the Degree type will have the following additional options in the editor \u2014 each being optional(but some are more recommended than none for an informative user experience):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Degree Details Title<\/strong>: The title you want to appear at the top of the page. This might not necessarily be the name of the degree(or the main title of the page if you are using BU Banners).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Degree Details<\/strong>: This will be a short, top-level description meant to introduce users to the degree and will appear under the Degree Details Title.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Minimum Credits<\/strong>: Minimum number of credits required.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Minimum Semesters<\/strong>: Minimum number of semesters required.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Minimum Courses<\/strong>: Minimum number of courses required.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Academic Bulletin Link<\/strong>: Enter a link to know more details about this degree on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\">bu.edu\/academics<\/a> site. We recommend keeping users on the CDS site for additional details instead of directing them to the Academic Bulletin in order to focus users on more marketing-centric content.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Degree Option<\/strong>: Select the type of degree offered (e.g., BS, MS, PhD, etc.). <em>To limit the options shown in the editor to only degree types available, see Enable Degree Options below.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Education Level<\/strong>: Select the relevant education level of this degree (e.g., Certificate, Doctorate, Graduate, Undergraduate).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Formats<\/strong>: Select available formats for the degree (e.g., Hybrid, In-Person, Online).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Availability<\/strong>: Select options of availability for the degree (e.g., Full-Time, Part-Time).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Location<\/strong>: Select locations available for the degree(e.g., Off-Campus, On-Campus).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Area of Study<\/strong>: Select any related Areas of Study. <em>These link back to the related Department\/Division or Area of Study landing page will be controlled by what is selected here.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<h4>Program Call To Action<\/h4>\n<p>Towards the bottom of the page, under \u201cProgram Call to Action\u201d you can enable a CTA button that will appear in the Sub-Navigation. This is great for directing users to a post or 3rd party page to either apply or to a page with a form for requesting more information. You can also select whether it will appear on all of a posts child sub-posts.<\/p>\n<h4>SEO, Custom Metadata Tags<\/h4>\n<p>Also at the bottom of the page, under \u201cSEO, Custom Metadata Tags\u201d you can make adjustments to the Page Title and meta data displayed by search engines such as Google to optimize your SEO.<\/p>\n<h4>Featured Image<\/h4>\n<p>A Featured Image for a post being edited can be attached in the right sidebar, under the Document tab. Uploading or selecting an image here will show it as a thumbnail image for the post on a Related Program block used on program or page posts.<\/p>\n<h4>Excerpt<\/h4>\n<p>An excerpt for a post being edited can be attached in the right sidebar \u2014 also under the Document tab. This will show a brief description for the post on a Related Program block used on program or page posts. It&#8217;s advised this be written to align with the program&#8217;s summary and\/or degree&#8217;s details.<\/p>\n<h2>Enable Degree Options<\/h2>\n<p><span>To enable degree options for the Degrees &amp; Programs posts, navigate to <strong>Degrees &amp; Programs<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Enable Degree Options<\/strong> within the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cds-faculty\/wp-admin\">WordPress Admin<\/a>. Select any degree options available. This will make it easier for site editors to create or edit Degree &amp; Programs posts, as only the available options selected from this will show up within the posts editor site-wide instead of providing you with the full list of degree options.
