If you need more items than this, maybe it&#8217;s time to rethink your choices. Have they been thoughtfully selected and organized?\u00a0Could you be taking better advantage of linking in your pages?\u00a0Or do some of your main navigation items actually belong in the utility navigation?\u00a0<strong>The key to simple and clear navigation is giving users options that point them in the right direction without overwhelming them with choices.<\/strong>\u00a0It&#8217;s like driving directions.\u00a0Clear, basic instructions are easy to follow. Complicated steps and too many roadsigns along the way make a trip difficult. Avoid giving your users <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Analysis_paralysis\">analysis paralysis<\/a> by limiting your main navigation to five to seven\u00a0items.<\/p>\n<h2>Editing the\u00a0main navigation<\/h2>\n<p>Add or remove items from the full menu by checking\/unchecking the &#8220;Display in navigation lists&#8221; tab on any top-level page of the site. Keep in mind that the full menu is limited to seven items and will pull in the first seven\u00a0top-level pages with this item checked, as determined by the order you select in <a href=\"http:\/\/bu.edu\/sed\/wp-admin\/edit.php?post_type=page&amp;page=bu-navigation-manager\">Pages &gt; Edit Order<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/cds\/research-sister\/files\/2016\/07\/Screen-Shot-2016-07-28-at-10.00.07-AM1.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2016-07-28 at 10.00.07 AM\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-20\" height=\"248\" width=\"306\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Troubleshooting the main navigation<\/h2>\n<p>If an item isn&#8217;t showing in the main\u00a0navigation after you click, follow this list to double-check that everything is set correctly:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Display in navigation lists <\/strong>is checked on the page you want to show in the full menu.<\/li>\n<li>There are only six other top-level pages set to display in the navigation. If there are more, they will not show. Responsive\u00a0supports up to seven navigation items.<\/li>\n<li>You have not added any Custom CSS that may interfere with how the full menu functionality works.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If none of the above fixes the problem, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/contact\/\">submit a ticket to IS&amp;T<\/a> and someone will look into the problem further.<\/p>\n<h4>Required settings for the main navigation in Responsive:<\/h4>\n<p>In <a href=\"http:\/\/bu.edu\/sed\/wp-admin\/themes.php?page=bu-navigation-settings\">Appearance &gt; Primary Navigation<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Display primary navigation bar<\/strong> should be checked.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Maximum items<span>\u2014seven<\/span>: <\/strong>You may use more if you are using the default navigation layout. It&#8217;s recommended you leave this at seven.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Use drop-down menus<\/strong>\u00a0can be checked if you want to support drop-down menus. Keep in mind this is not recommended for touch devices.
