Each navigation item is a choice for users. Keep these choices logical, with clear and concise labels that tell users what to expect when they click to that page.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Avoid\u00a0entering all uppercase or all lowercase labels in the navigation label (unless it is an editorial requirement, such as an acronym). Responsive and its child themes automatically handle\u00a0upper- and lowercase text for styling purposes, so when you manually enter\u00a0upper- or lowercase labels, it means that the theme can&#8217;t do its job. If you redesign your site or switch to a different theme, and you&#8217;ve manually entered upper- or lowercase labels, you will need to update each individual instance for the\u00a0new theme to work correctly.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>If you want to change this\u00a0style in Responsive, check out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/services\/cccs\/websites\/www\/wordpress\/how-to\/use-custom-styles\/\">Custom CSS<\/a>, which allows you to use CSS to target navigation and make this change without affecting content.<\/p>\n<h2>The default navigation layout<\/h2>\n<p>The default navigation will support as many top-level navigation items as you have\u00a0allowed in Appearance &gt; Primary Navigation. More information on editing the\u00a0main navigation in this layout option can be found at <a href=\"https:\/\/wpdocs.bu.edu\/cds\/updating-your-site-navigation\/edit-the-full-menu\/\">edit the full menu<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>The top\u00a0navigation layout<\/h2>\n<p>The top\u00a0navigation layout\u00a0displays your navigation above the branding.<\/p>\n<h2>The side\u00a0navigation layout<\/h2>\n<p>The side\u00a0navigation layout\u00a0displays your navigation\u00a0on the left side. Side navigation is highly recommended for sites with a\u00a0relatively flat navigation structure. If you have five to seven\u00a0top-level pages and none of them have child pages, this is a great choice for your site.<\/p>\n<h2>The no-navigation layout<\/h2>\n<p>You can choose not to show navigation at all. This is a great option if\u00a0you don&#8217;t need navigation, as in the case of single-page sites.<\/p>\n<h2>Changing your navigation layout<\/h2>\n<p>Navigation layout options are available under Appearance &gt; Customize, in the Layout section.
