Archive
An archive page is a page that WordPress automatically generates and shows a collection of posts grouped by post type, category, author, date, tag, or other types of information. Archive pages are also sometimes referred to as listing pages and are a critical part of the navigation of your website. Using the Office of the Provost site as an example, some ways you might encounter an archive page in WordPress include:
- Clicking on a category link in a news item, such as the Administration category, which shows all posts in the Administration category
- Clicking on an author link in a news item, such as David Lazar, which shows all posts by David Lazar
- Removing the day and title from a news URL to show just the month and year, such as this page with all posts from July 2020
- Removing all but the year from the news URL, such as this page with all posts from 2020
As you can see, archive pages are one way that your audience can easily navigate to collections of related content. With great content organization and use of categories and tags on your news posts, you can make it easy for your audience to discover more content on your website by anything from author to media type.
