Title: PEOPLE, COD, AND THE BLOB:MARINE HISTORICAL ECOLOGY IN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT Commercial fisheries across the North Pacific Ocean are under threat from marine heat waves, invasive species introductions, coastal erosion, and other hazards. In the face of such change, resource managers are increasingly looking to archaeological and paleoenvironmental data, Indigenous knowledge, and historical archives to understand long-term variability in ecosystems and human-animal interactions. Drawing on the Pacific cod fishery as an example, this presentation addresses how marine historical ecology might inform fisheries management and provide historical context for contemporary change.
