You never know what the user is looking for, so don’t make assumptions or pigeon-hole them into one categoryEach post in WordPress can be filed under one or more catego.... Restrict content only when absolutely necessary, especially when the content pertains to privacy or legal matters.

Some examples of necessary restrictions include:

  • Preventing a minor’s access to particular content
  • Limiting employee access to a site section intended for employees in other areas of the world

Examples of unnecessary restriction include restricting the use of a tool for course planning (not registration) to current students. Because all course information is publicly accessible, there is no harm in allowing a prospective student to see this tool. In fact, this transparency could be what makes the difference between putting in an application to your school.

It can also help prospective students to be able to plan for different processes you may see as only being “current student” processes. For example, a prospective student may want to understand the process of transferring a course from another school for credit to your department, including any forms and deadlines. Restricting this content because it only seems useful to a current student – even if it being public does no harm – prevents the prospective transfer student from finding the information they need and feeling confident in applying to your school.
